The article I chose was titled “Hurts so Good” by Sakeus Bankson. I think the main point of the piece was to tell the audience Carston Oliver’s story and how he became interested in spices, which led to him now growing some of the hottest peppers in the world while also being a mountain biker and skier.
What stood out to me the most was how much Carston knew about peppers and hot sauces and how they affect our mouth, eyes, and skin. He was very educated and made the readers believe and trust what he was saying. Specifically what stood out/was interesting to me was when he was explaining how the particular spices reacted with your skin; for example how drinking milk is more helpful than drinking water when you eat Capsaicin because it is an oil based spice. What was also interesting to me was that he was growing the hottest peppers in the world, right in his backyard. He said he was growing Caroline Reaper peppers and Trinidad Moruga scorpions, which are the top two hottest peppers.
I think that Carston did a really good job of making everything easy to understand. It was very easy to read and follow throughout the article. Also, how the author sequenced the interview with the story in the beginning made it engaging and relatable. The authors questions were also fun and light-hearted. He asked things like “Have you had any disasters?” It was also interesting that he included a recipe to make your own hot sauce at home.
