Corporation/Brand Blog

The company/brand I chose to research was Louis Vuitton. They are a well known, high end, purse and accessories company that sells their products to almost every country in the world. Companies that require much transportation of its exports, struggle with keeping their carbon footprint low. Not only that, purse companies have been scrutinized for years about depriving nature of its natural resources, such as snake skin or leather, and extorting them for fashion and money.

Louis Vuitton was founded in 1854 in Paris, France. The product that gained traction among customers was their flat-topped trunks, which had not been seen before in the market. Traditional trunks were rounded on top and could not be easily stacked. This changed with the new Louis Vuitton design and the company exploded from there. They first began to use leather in their products in 1945 and started producing mainly handbags, purses, wallets, etc.

Luis Vuitton on the other hand has an “Environmental Commitment” page on their official website that is very lengthy and lists detailed accomplishments and how they operate sustainably. First and foremost the website starts off by listing their core values, which include innovation and savoir-faire, which is french for “know how to do”. The company as a whole uses sustainable and reusable materials in the packaging process, in each of their factories, and in every Louis Vuitton store and shop around the globe. Each store is held to high environmental standards and must pass various tests. More specifically, “Louis Vuitton conducts more than 200 audits per year to verify that suppliers meet high social and environmental standards”. One very interesting and unique aspect of the company is that they focus on what they call “circular creativity”, or in other words end-of-life solutions. They understand that packaging and even at some point the item itself may need to be thrown away. Recently, a successful project called “Cuirs Patrimoine” turned obsolete leather hides into new product, and overall reused 60% of their leather scraps. They are even taking initiative store by store by “choosing the most efficient air cooling and heating systems and by the installation of solar panels and LED lighting across all built areas”. Overall it can be concluded that Louis Vuitton is a pro-environmental and sustainable company as they continue to try to improve their business and bring down their carbon emissions and waste altogether.

According to Opensecrets.org, the company PAC itself in 2020 contributed no money to any candidate. However, individuals such as employees, owners, or close family members, donated in total $12,925. Over 99% of the contributions went to the democratic party and some candidates that received the most amount of donation include Pete Buttigieg, Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden, and Elizabeth Warren. The average contribution made to each candidate was $570 although Pete and Bernie received over $1,000 each. Donating to democratic candidates is significant because they are very environment aware and especially candidates like Bernie Sanders who co wrote the Green New Deal and has extensive plans for net zero carbon emissions and a green future. This shows that Louis Vuitton support candidates who has similar morals and goals as them and truly want to do better for the environment and the world.
